A number of Calliope athletes compete in the Auckland masters athletics competition. Here are some of the results.
Auckland Masters January 15th
Unfortunately they started the events 15 minutes ahead of time without proper warning and when the first race 1500m started Greg was still warming up and missed it. He had been hoping to do a 1500m PB and break 5 minutes. Based on his 3K later and competition in the 1500m Greg would have likely run 5:00 - 5:05, if not faster. In the 3000m Greg led all the way winning the race and his age group in 10:34.36 (74.75%), half a minute ahead of well-known QC, race-horse breeder and owner, and world age-group gold medalist Alan Galbraith. In the same race John Dwyer ran 14:45.11 and Bruce was a DNF. In the earlier 1500m John ran 6:58.24 and Bruce 7:28.03. Dave McMillan competed in the Shot his best distance being an impressive 9.43. Dave's name came up for a spot prize, but he had left for family duties. John subsequently scored one in a later draw though, a decorative plate

AUCKLAND MASTERS (Link).
Three Calliope members, Bruce and John of course plus Greg having his first run at Mt Smart, competed in Top Team 1 last Sunday (December 13th) in very warm but reasonably calm conditions. It was a bit like running in an oven with temperatures 26-28 degrees. Greg started off with a very good 3000m in 10:39.8 and getting 2nd overall first in his age group with John running 15:23.01. An hour later it was the 800m which Greg took out in 2:16.64, first overall, John running 3:31.95 and Bruce 3:37.2. That wasn't enough for Greg and 20 mins later he lined up in the 400m coming home in 61.83. Percentages are not known yet and as the Masters use yearly tables not daily tables like us, there is no point in calculating them ourselves. Most of the athletes adjourned for lunch and spot-prizes but Greg could not be seen. He found there was a high jump still going and he went over and competed in that as well. He jumped 1.30 and was one of the last three in but well behind the winner who went over at 1.70. However, we were told that jumper had jumped for Korea in the Olympic Games. Greg's times were a further example of improvements gained by running on an all weather surface and a full sized track. Bruce took out one of the spot prizes; a backpack picnic set. The next meeting is Sat (not Sun) Jan 15th |
